How to Search for Information

This section describes the techniques I used to search for and find information. The resources available to me were:

  • Peers.
  • The Internet.
  • Books and magazines.
  • Official info from Microsoft (MSDN Library, TechNet, and Platform SDK).
  • Dejanews.com, newsgroups, and mailing lists.

The remainder of this section describes each item in more detail.

Peers

When struggling along researching an unknown field it is good to have a colleague or two around who are experts in the area. May be they have spent years doing this already. If such people are available it usually takes only a few minutes for them to provide an expert advise potentially saving days or weeks of investigating work.

The Internet

There are search engines and they are numerous. One of the ways to invoke one of them is by using the search button of an Internet browser. Seach engines are not created equal. Some of them get you lots of unrelevant information, some are smarter. Most of the engines sell keywords. Smart engines do this too.

Here is a list of some of search engines.

My favorite is google.com for now because it appears to provide somewhat better search results (in my opinion) by using smart counting of HTML links from other sites. The result set from a search query appears to contain little garbage if you are somewhere around the top.

Books and Magazines

This is rather obvious point. The most useful magazine for me during Windows NT / Windows 2000 security research turned out to be Windows 2000 Magazine http://www.win2000mag.com/.
